Closure Of I-84 Expected To Cause Traffic Jams In Danbury This Weekend

DANBURY, Conn. – The Connecticut Department of Transportation is warning residents to plan accordingly for upcoming weekend closures and detours on I-84 near the New York-Connecticut border that are expected to cause massive traffic jams and delays in Danbury and beyond.

The roadwork and closure of I-84 in New York is expected to back up traffic all the way to Southbury or farther. CTDOT expects many drivers to seek alternate shortcuts through the City of Danbury, which is likely to affect city traffic severely.

The I-84 westbound lanes will be closed for at least 20 hours from 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22.

The road will be closed at Exit 1 in Danbury and all westbound traffic will be diverted down the exit ramp. Traffic will then move onto Saw Mill Road, or Route 6/202, a four-lane road that runs parallel to I-84.

Drivers will travel toward the closest I-84 interchange in Southeast, N.Y., CTDOT said.

Signs are up in multiple locations, warning drivers of the closure.

Travelers may choose to avoid I-84 altogether. Those with origins north of the work may choose I-90 for east-west travel. Those with origins south of the work may choose I-95/I-287 or the Merritt Parkway.

Then, on Saturday, Sept. 28, I-84’s eastbound lanes will be closed for at least 20 hours from 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29. For that work, I-84 eastbound will be closed at Exit 20 in Southeast, N.Y. Traffic will be detoured onto Route 6 in New York and returned to I-84 at Exit 1 in Danbury.

The New York State Department of Transportation is replacing the two Putnam County bridges that carry I-84 over Dingle Ridge Road in Southeast. NYSDOT said work is being accelerated to minimize traffic impacts but will require I-84 to be closed during construction for two weekends.

The date of the eastbound closure will depend on the replacement of the westbound bridge, happening first.  If there are any problems with the westbound bridge, the I-84 eastbound lane closures could be delayed by one week, CTDOT said.
