Memorial Day was more than a week away, but solemn words and stirring music was offered at the annual Shea-Magrath Memorial Service at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk on Sunday. The event, which honors Norwalk's two Medal of Honor winners, took on added poignancy this year with the recent combat death of David Fahey, a Norwalk native who was killed in Afghanistan.
Musicians from Brien McMahon High School provided a concert of patriotic songs and winners of the Norwalk Veterans Memorial Committee essay contest received their awards. U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, pinch-hitting for Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, and Cadet 2nd Lt. Angelica Ramos of the Norwalk High School ROTC unit gave speeches honoring veterans past and present. A bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" by Deputy Fire Chief Ed Prescott served as a touching and fitting punctuation for the day.
