2,800 Pounds of Trash Pulled From a Norwalk River

NORWALK, Conn. - Volunteers found a BB gun, a garage-door motor, a stove top, a toilet and a safe among the 2,836 pounds of trash they pulled from the banks of Norwalk's Five Mile River.

Volunteers scoured the river's banks at Norwalk Community College's West Campus, collecting plenty of water bottles and beer cans, said Mike Cangi, directorof cleanups at United By Blue, one of the sponsors of the clean-up.

"Surrounded by a beautiful river and bike trails, the Five Mile River area is somewhat of a hidden gem," Cangi said. "Just because we can't see the river doesn't mean it's not in need of our attention."

Cleaning trash from the river keeps it from flowing into Long Island Sound, he said.

Outdoor Sports Center of Wilton co-sponsored the cleanup.

"We were impressed by the amount of trash removed from the river, but at the same time very saddened by the amount of waste," said Scott Maxwell, Outdoor Sports Center general manager.
