In his new role, Winter will serve as an advocate in the local community, provide guidance on clinic policies and procedures, and assist with volunteer recruitment.
Winter has been volunteering at the clinic for 20 years. He recently retired as chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Norwalk Hospital. He is also a clinical professor of medicine at Yale University.
The clinic serves more than 700 low-income uninsured residents of Norwalk and surrounding towns.
“AmeriCares patients have scheduled appointments, experienced volunteer doctors spend the time that is needed to provide high-quality compassionate care, and the support staff is engaged, enthusiastic and caring,” Winter said. “The patient is the center of everything. This is what medical care is supposed to look like whether you are rich or poor, insured or uninsured.”
Winter has also been involved with the free clinics’ parent organization, serving on the AmeriCares Board of Directors from 2003 to 2014 and participating in at least 20 relief missions.
“The free clinics represent a natural extension of the AmeriCares mission to support health on a global platform,” Winter said.
Stamford-based AmeriCares is a nonprofit disaster relief and global health organization providing immediate response to emergency medical needs and supporting long-term health care initiatives for people in the United States and around the world.
