NORWALK, Conn. -- A Wilton couple's model lighthouse is on display in Norwalk as part of The Maritime Aquarium's "Festival of Lighthouses Contest."
Lighthouses will be on display for the 12th annual contest daily through Jan. 20. Among the 22 entries is Wilton residents Katie Keating and her boyfriend Mike Giuffre's "Millstone Tower." The exhibit is free with Aquarium admission. Visitors can vote for their favorites. The lighthouse with the most votes wins $1,500.
“The best gifts are those gifts that are unexpected yet show great thought,”?said Judith Bacal, the aquarium’s director of exhibits. “The ‘Lighthouse Contest’ is like a gift for us each year, because the designs are always so unexpected and the finished works show such thought and craftsmanship.”
Katie Keating’s parents, Sean and Ivy Keating, entered the contest in 2011 and 2012, and she and Giuffre took up the challenge this year. The entry is a six-sided lighthouse "that tapers up to a light, neatly tucked under a gazebo-style roof. Holiday wreaths cut a spiral path up the outside, while snowflakes dust the scene below of trees, deer and a waterwheel."
Residents in Norwalk, Stamford and Bridgeport and as far as Newtown, Ansonia and Shelton as well as Hartsdale and Wappingers Falls, N.Y., submitted entries for this year's contest. Winners will be announced at an evening reception Jan. 23.
The 2013 “Festival of Lighthouses Contest” is free with Maritime Aquarium general admission, which is $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for youths (13-17) & seniors (65+), and $12.95 for children ages 3-12.
