Westport Artist Offers Problem-Solving Course

For some people, a superior summer might include tuning up their backstroke or replanting their garden. For those hoping to reignite their art making, there is Westport artist Robert Baxter's upcoming class at Rowayton Arts Center, "The Art of Technique," June 30 to Aug. 18. Baxter plans to cover key areas to help artists raise their game, whether they work in oil, acrylic, watercolor or other media. The classes include a live model and offer many problem solving strategies.

"This is a 'how-to' course with an emphasis on the figure in the interior. Problem-solving covers a wide spectrum ranging from composition to glazing, from mood to mixing flesh, and all of the stuff in between," Baxter says.

A former Silvermine School of Art teacher, Baxter was a founder of Westport's Studio II, a studio/school in the 1970s. He also conducted painting workshops in France in the 1980s. His oil and watercolor paintings have won many awards, including France's Paul Cezanne Medal, the Ogden and Mary Pleissner Award, and awards from the American Watercolor Society, the Allied Artists of America, the National Academy of Design and the Society of Illustrators.
