Watercolor Wins Rowayton Art Show

Rowayton artist Matt Wachnicki's gouache watercolor "Cold" was awarded Best In Show Sunday at the 26th Mavis Fenner Memorial All-Media Exhibit at the Rowayton Arts Center.

Other awards given by Judge Duvian Montoya are: acrylics, Edith McClean of Rowayton, first place, Sandra Aldrich of Westport, honorable mention; drawing, Gerry Guarino of Normandy Beach, NJ; mixed media, Gregg Welz of Norwalk, first place, Don Axleroad of Stamford, second place, Ellen Gordon of Stamford, third place; oil paintings, Joel Flora of Rowayton, first, Kathryn Glover of Norwalk, second, Linda George of Darien, third; pastel, Janine Brown of Fairfield; photography, Barbara Murphy of Rowayton, first, Robert Sachs of Rowayton, second, Ben Larrabee of Darien, third, Richard Ventre of Norwalk, honorable mention; prints, Vicki Smith of Darien; watercolor, Wendy Pieper of Westport, first, Hanneke Goedkoop of Rowayton, second, Marianne Rothballer of New Canaan, third.

The awards were presented by Mavis Fenner's daughter and granddaughter, artists Virginia and Janet Bates. Fenner, who was involved with RAC from its beginning in 1960, became the Arts Center's curator in 1973, retiring 10 years later because of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

All the artwork in the exhibit is for sale. The exhibit is on display through Nov. 7 at the Rowayton Arts Center, 145 Rowayton Ave. The RAC gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
