Farm Creek Preserve, at 34 Sammis Street, offered the opportunity to learn about the importance of estuaries. They clean water of pollutants from upstream, serve as hatcheries for fish, allow migratory birds a safe place to rest – and more.
The Norwalk Land Trust opened the Barn to estuary displays, provided guides for water’s-edge tours, and put the focus on its work.
The Farm Creek Preserve in Norwalk consists of 16 acres at low tide and was acquired by the nonprofit Norwalk Land Trust--dedicated to preserving open space--for $4.3 million by bundling four pieces of property.
The property offers trails for exploration, many species of trees and a wildflower garden and plots of milkweed that attract Monarch butterflies.
The Campaign for Farm Creek Preserve began in 2006 and ended in 2011, raising more than $4.3 million, with assistance from the Conservation Fund of Alexandria Va.; State of Connecticut DEEP, City of Norwalk; the Sixth Taxing District of Norwalk; and more than 900 households.
A tidal estuary is a rich resource and nursery for the entire food chain. Since 2010, several thousand fourth-graders from the public schools of Norwalk have visited and learned. And classes of the middle schools and high schools have performed water testing experiments, and helped to build and maintain trails.
