Video: New Jersey Teen Reels In 200-Pound Shark

EMERSON, N.J. — Emerson's Gianni Mandile and his dad had one more day, after two uneventful outings, to catch a good fish before leaving Long Beach Island.

Emerson's Gianni Mandile, 13, and his father, Joseph, reeled in a 200-pound shark in Long Beach Island Sunday.

Then the 13-year-old felt his pole really start to shake.

"It feels like a shark," Gianni told his father, Joseph. After 25 patient minutes of alternately reeling in and letting out the line, the Mandiles could see the silhouette.

Another 20 minutes later, they spotted the 200-pound shark.

"We got it in close enough where the shark kind of jumped out of the water," Joseph Mandile told Daily Voice. "I ended up running out to grab it and we got it onto the sand."

Gianni, who spends much of his time watching fishing videos on YouTube, showed his father how to hold the mouth open for a photo capturing the captive.

It turns out that the hook was barely set in the shark's mouth, but Gianni was able to tire his quarry out just enough to reel him in.

"It started swimming back onto the shore," Joseph Mandile said. "So I went and flipped it around, gave it a little push and it swam back into the ocean."
