FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – When it comes to pet ownership, Connecticut is definitely not going to the dogs.

According to a study done by the American Veterinary Medical Association, only 28.3 percent of Connecticut households own a dog, fewer than anyplace else in the country except for Massachusetts with 23.6 percent and the District of Columbia with 13.1 percent.

When it comes to cat ownership, Connecticut is in the middle of the pack.

In Arkansas, 47.9 percent of households own a dog,  and in Vermont 49.5 percent of households own a cat.

Vermont takes the overall pet ownership crown with almost 71 percent of its households owning a pet. The District of Columbia came in at the bottom with 22 percent.

The study is done by the American Veterinary Medical Association every five years, and was completed last year for information available as of December 2011.
