NORWALK, Conn. - A fundraising gala to benefit Shakespeare on the Sound will be held Saturday, April 5, at the Dolce Center at 32 Weed Ave. in Norwalk.

Shakespeare on the Sound is creating a surrealist theme inspired by Salvador Dali in support of a growing educational outreach and the production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park in June.

The evening offers dinner, silent and live auctions and dancing to the music of the Greenwich-based Short Bus Band, consistently acclaimed in polls as the best cover band in Fairfield County.

The hope is to build on the momentum of successes in the past and make sure everyone has a lot of fun, says Leslie Lawrence of Rowayton, convener of the event.

Among the items up for auction is an eight-day excursion to South Africa—covering a safari and the wine country—contributed by Travel Sommelier of Norwalk.

“The Two Gentlemen of Verona” is a romantic comedy that unfolds outdoors in the park June 12 to 19 as Shakespeare on the Sound’s 19th annual presentation. The play is believed to be The Bard’s earliest stage work and probes the moral perplexities of fidelity and betrayal as two friends compete for the heart of the same woman.

In lieu of a charge for admission to the park and the show, a $20 donation is suggested, $10 for seniors and students.

The gala - and donations - help to fund the cost of the production and interactive educational activities assembled for young people such as the anti-bullying initiative called “Speaking Daggers” and a brand new dimension for younger students, “Let’s Play Shakespeare.”
