On Saturday, March 28, volunteers from Norwalk’s Maritime Rowing Club braved the snowy conditions to collect goods for the local food bank that Person-to-Person opened a little more than a year ago.

The Maritime Rowing Club competes under New Canaan High School -- which does not have a crew of its own, according to Celeste Marsh, communications coordinator of New Canaan Rowing.

“We were looking for a way to help the kids do some community service, and Person-to-Person is right up the street from us,” Marsh said.

New Canaan High School and the Norwalk Maritime Rowing Club are engaged in fundraisers on a regular basis such as the Long Island Row for Autism, but this was their first chance to help a community partner, she said.

Joining in Marsh at Stop & Shop on Saturday for the food drive were New Canaan High School Crew members Colt DeWolf, 18, and John Byrne, 16.

The Maritime Rowing Club and the New Canaan students decided to hold their food drive in March after learning that food pantries begin to run low on inventory during this time of the year, Marsh said. Both DeWolf, who will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall, and Byrne said they hoped to come back and run the food drive again next year.

The New Cannan duo distributed handouts to shoppers thanking them for a nonparishable donation, identifying these items as most needed for the food bank:

  • Canned beans
  • Dry beans
  • Hearty soups
  • Mac and cheese
  • Tuna fish
  • Pasta
  • Oatmeal
  • Cereal
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly
  • Tea
