Pivor Leads Runners in Calf Pasture Cancer Race

Holly Pivor outran cancer 10 years ago. Now, she's getting others to run so the race against cancer can be won, once and for all. Pivor is the co-chair, with her husband Jeff, of the run and walk to be held at Calf Pasture Beach on May 14. The event benefits the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.

"The walk has been held for years, but two years ago we added a 5K race," said Pivor. "It's still a small part of the overall event, but we're hoping it continues to grow." This year's goal is to get more than 200 runners to join the 2,000-plus walkers, who last year raised more than $300,000, adding to the $1.2 million raised to date.

Pivor is joined on the race committee by Yvonne Shlansky and Anna Mastrolillo, also cancer survivors, and Varsha Pathore, whose husband treated the other three women. "It's my little way of giving back," says Mastrolillo.

This year's run will have added poignancy, because it's been renamed in memory of Sally Kalin, who died last year after an eight-year battle with cancer. The run features a new more streamlined course, and will start before the walk, giving runners an unimpeded path. "We're trying to put a little more emphasis on the run to build it up," says Pivor.

Runners and walkers will enjoy post-race refreshments and entertainment by DNR, a band of nearly all doctors. The race begins at noon, with registration opening at 10 a.m. Complete details are available on the event website .
