Outdoor Sports Center Makes Skiing An Affordable Family Activity

WILTON, Conn. – Working at The Ski Hut in Wilton in the 1970s, Jack Maxwell found a way to make skiing affordable for the entire family. Now called Outdoor Sports Center, Maxwell’s original premise has been refined and sharpened, and thousands of residents in Fairfield County have benefited.

Nearly 40 years ago, Maxwell realized families would have to pay about $300 per child every year to keep them skiing. The kids would outgrow their equipment swiftly. They would become too big for their boots, too tall for their skis. Parents had to purchase new equipment if they wanted to continue skiing as a family, or rent equipment every time they visited the mountains.

Maxwell’s solution was to rent equipment for the season. His plan allowed families the flexibility to ski when they wanted – without renting at the ski area.

That’s how the rental program started at Outdoor Sports. The rental cost was $70 per child, and families kept the gear for the whole season. Now 40 years later, the price is only $90 for children. They get skis, boots and poles to keep for the season, so families can ski whenever they like.

The package also includes discounts and free lift tickets to some of the best mountains in the region. The fitting process takes about 10 to 15 minutes per person, and there is a wide selection of new and used equipment for children and adults.

People who prefer new equipment can participate in Outdoor Sports Center’s buyback program for junior gear. Customers receive 60 percent of a qualifying ski or boot toward the purchase of a new ski or boot.

Outdoor Sports Center's ski programs are intended to make the sport cost-efficient and accessible for everyone. Customers are encouraged to visit soon for the best selection for the upcoming season.
