Norwalk's STAR Awards Supporters At Annual Meeting

NORWALK, Conn. — STAR, Inc., a non-profit organization serving individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities, recognized major supporters during its 62nd annual meeting last month.

David Shockley from the City of Norwalk Department of Redevelopment received The Humanitarian Award for his ongoing support of STAR through service on the board and his work on several fundraising events.

Bill Varvaros, owner of Country Convenience in Norwalk, was recognized as Business Volunteer of the Year for serving as sponsor and donor for the STAR Walk, Roll & Stroll, Theater of STARs and numerous other events.  Kate Minor of Norwalk was awarded the Jeannette Shivers Service Award for her efforts in helping others. She is a participant in STAR’s Day Services, Employment Services and Recreational Services. Andrew and Dee Stefanou of Andrew Stefanou Salon and Spa in Darien were deemed Employers of the Year; Joe Russo and Chuck’s Steakhouse of Darien were recognized for their employment of Jordan Condolora; Helene Collins, a Darien girl scout was awarded Youth Humanitarian/Volunteer of the Year Award for her creation and maintenance of the Book Buddies book club for people with developmental disabilities; and Viktoris Vaituzis of New York City received the Jo Mercede Volunteer of the Year Award for his assistance with STAR’s Rubberband, Theater of STARs and Annual Walk, Roll & Stroll.

The Greens Farms Garden Club of Westport received Community Volunteers of the Year Award for its ongoing work with STAR’s Garden Club; Arunas Vaituzis of Wilton received the Self Advocate Award for his work with the Self Advocacy Group; and Maria Burgos of Bridgeport along with Carmela Giuliani of Trumbull received STAR Heroes’ Awards for their service at STAR.

Mayor Harry Rilling and state Rep. Gail LaVielle joined an audience of almost 200 supporters during the event.
