NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now Inc. announced that it received a $34,000 grant from Purdue Pharma. made in support of NEON-Stamford’s After School Academy and Literacy program.

NEON’s After School Academy and Literacy program is part of the agency’s Education & Youth department that serves children 5-13 years of age. The program provides academic, enrichment, and recreation programs and activities to more than 70 children five days a week from September through June.

Children in the program participate in fun, academically beneficial activities that include subject-specific tutoring, preparation for Connecticut Mastery Testing (CMT), computer technology orientation, recreation, and social development.

“Purdue’s generous support of our After School Academy is a great example of how non-profit community-based organizations like NEON and the business sector can form strategic alliances to provide vital services to Fairfield County’s most vulnerable citizens, with a special focus on our most valuable asset for the future, our children,”  Chiquita Stephenson, NEON’s acting chief executive officer and  ]president, said in a prepared statement.

NEON serves vulnerable families in lower Fairfield County and operates numerous services and programs in the areas of early childhood development; adult and youth employment and training; energy assistance; neighborhood community centers; wealth and asset development; after-school activities; family services; community corrections and substance abuse residential services.

The grant came under the Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act tax-credit program, under which companies that make cash contributions to eligible NEON programs can receive a tax credit of 60 to 100percent of their approved donations.
