NORWALK, Conn. – The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is helping its Jewish visitors observe the Festival of Sukkot through Wednesday, Sept. 25.

The aquarium has erected a traditional tent-like dwelling – called a sukkah -- on its grounds. This tent is available for Jewish visitors to dine under during the seven-day celebration.

“We value our Jewish guests, and are happy to offer them a place to have lunch that accommodates their religious customs,” said Chris Loynd, the aquarium’s marketing director in a statement. “Part of the Sukkot tradition is to celebrate nature. The Maritime Aquarium is a great place for that, and we want visitors observing the Sukkot holiday to have a comfortable place for lunch or snacks.”

Commonly referred to as “the Season of Rejoicing," the Festival of Sukkot began Wednesday, the fifth day after Yom Kippur.

During Sukkot (pronounced sue-COAT), a temporary hut for eating meals and spending time, is erected to commemorate the divine providence of the Israelites being sustained in the desert wilderness after they were freed from slavery in Egypt.

The Maritime Aquarium planned for its 12-by-20-foot sukkah – which will be outside the seal exhibit, on the riverfront courtyard – with Rabbi Levi Stone of the Schneerson Center for Jewish Life in Westport.

The aquarium also is installing a new kosher vending machine.
