Breaking News: Norwalk High School Has Early Dismissal After Shelter In Place Issued

Norwalk's Charities Accept City's Gifts

NORWALK, Conn. – Jason Fagan and Oliver Lawrence spent Tuesday afternoon spreading Christmas generosity to those who need it most.

The Department of Public Works employees took food and toys that were donated by city employees to the Open Door Shelter, the Salvation Army and Christian Community Action.

"We do this every year," said Mayor Richard Moccia, adding that the gifts go to those who "can't afford to have a good Christmas."

Charlotte Defrain of the Salvation Army said the delivery would be a "tremendous" help. "The need is so great," she said.

Christi Pope, CCA's executive director, agreed. "We are completely depleted of toys," she said. "We gave out 800 toys last week, and we still have people coming to the door, so this is a nice little shot in the arm. The new ones keep coming, and we can have a little something to be able to give them to take home."

CCA's food pantry is also in demand, and she expected to hand out holiday food to more than 100 families Tuesday, a long day at the center. "We have hams, we have turkeys," she said. "So some extra food on the shelves is huge. We're seeing a big, big number of people."

The women said it's not too late to donate. The Salvation Army distributes its toys and food Thursday, and donations are accepted at its center at 14 Byington Ave.

Pope said CCA is open through Friday but is closed next week. "We'll pretty much take anything," she said. "Toys, food, money. We like it all."

Protein is especially valuable, she said, hoping for canned tuna fish and peanut butter.
