NORWALK, Conn. An application for a waste-hauling and transfer station near the Stepping Stones Museum for Children will be discussed Wednesday evening during a special meeting of the Zoning and Planning Commission.
AMEC Carting LLC, located a 1 Crescent St., would like to modify its transfer station by adding tonnage and additional haulers. Crescent Street is adjacent to Devon's Place, the playground off the Stepping Stones parking lot.
The area is also planned to be part of the Norwalk River Valley Trail and the Harbor Loop Trail. Pine Island Cemetery is also nearby.
Diane Lauricella, an environmental professional, says the project could bring "three times the amount of truck traffic and waste" that AMEC Carting brings to the area now.
"I appeal to you to come to the meeting at 7:30 p.m., sign up to speak and listen to the presentations, then speak out or submit written comments if you feel that this expansion plan is a bad idea for Norwalk and the future plans for Mathews Park, the Norwalk River Valley Trail, Stepping Stones Children's Museum!" she wrote in an email late Tuesday. "While we will ask for a continuance-extension, it is not guaranteed and in Norwalk, highly improbable."
The site is too small for the expansion, she said, and "an increase of this magnitude could cause air and water pollution, affecting the health of the young children right across the street." She added that the application does not comply with the city's plan of conservation and development, the Mid-Harbor Master Plan, the Reed-Putnam Redevelopment Plan and the West Avenue Redevelopment Plan. The expansion was not discussed at the Recreation and Parks Council Committee meeting, according to Lauricella, and formal planning and zoning staff referrals were not requested of the planning commission, redevelopment agency or the health department.
The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, in the Common Council Chambers.
