Norwalk Symphony Festival Showcases Young Musicians

NORWALK, Conn. -- The winner of the Norwalk Symphony's third Young Artists Festival, held recently at Norwalk Concert Hall, will perform in concert with the group this weekend.

The event featured students at all levels who have at least two years of private study and have not yet graduated high school.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, the festival consisted of four levels, which serve to encourage and recognize the talented young musicians in Fairfield County. The Concerto Competition portion was held on Sunday, Feb. 8. Nearly 70 young musicians participated.

Paz Meyers won the Junior Level Competition, playing Elegie by Faure and a Bach Courante.

Wujin Kim who won the Senior Level with the first movement of Saint-Saens' Concerto No. 1 for Cello.

Jingyi  "Jenny" Yang was the Concerto Competition winner. She will perform Cecile Chaminade's "Concertino for Flute and Orchestra" at the Norwalk Symphony Family Concert on Sunday, March 8, at 3 p.m. at the Norwalk Concert Hall.

Also on the program are Gustav Holst's "Jupiter" from "The Planets" and John Williams' "Imperial March" from the "Star Wars" movie, with symphony musicians sitting side-by-side with Youth Symphony members, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Symphony No. 41 -- Jupiter."
