Norwalk Lawmakers To Receive Beacon Awards

State Sen. Bob Duff, D-Norwalk, and state Rep. Larry Cafero, R-Norwalk, will be honored with the Norwalk Seaport Association's 2011 Beacon Awards on Saturday. "We are pleased to recognize Bob and Larry's records as preservation champions," Tom Shrum, seaport president, said in a statement. "With other Norwalk officials, these two state legislators were instrumental in securing funds to renovate and preserve Sheffield Island Lighthouse, which the Seaport Association purchased in 1986. They also have been active in the negotiations to save other properties with local historical significance."

The awards will be presented during this year's Light Keeper's Gala, which will be held Saturday evening at the Norwalk Inn & Conference Center, 99 East Ave.

Shrum said, "100 percent of the funds raised at the Light Keeper's Gala support public education about our local marine environment and maritime heritage; preservation of the 1868 Sheffield Lighthouse and Light Keeper's Cottage; and conservation of the Sheffield Island habitat."

Dr. Mary Hamill, co-chair of the event with Shrum, issued an invitation.

"We hope everyone will join us for an evening of dancing, casino games, cocktails, fine food and fun – in a festive 'cruise ship' atmosphere," she said. Tickets are $125 per person. Reservations can be made online or by calling the Norwalk Seaport Association at 203-838-9444.
