NORWALK, Conn. -- Residents enjoyed the sights and sounds of the '60s as Norwalk kicked off its summer concert series at Calf Pasture Beach on Wednesday, June 25, with a classic car show and a performance by Tim Currie's Motown Band.
The concerts will be held every Wednesday evening through September. This year's series celebrates the 45th anniversary of Woodstock and the 50th anniversary of the Beatles, and features tribute bands for Jimmy Buffett, the Beatles, Johnny Cash, the Eagles and ABBA. All concerts are free, with a $10 parking fee for cars without a Norwalk beach sticker.
In keeping with the classic theme, Wednesday's concert was preceded by a showcase of classic cars hosted by the Coachmen Rod and Custom Car Club. Dozens of owners brought their vintage cars for the show.
Verdi Richardson brought his 1954 Bentley, which he has owned for 32 years. He bought it from friend who was taking good care of it, and primarily uses it for going to church and shows.
"It's a classic car," Richardson said. "The style has class. The way it's built, you don't see that anymore."
Ross Madden bought his 1955 Chevy five years ago. He redid the motor and gave it new wheels and tires. The car is actually the third '55 Chevy he has owned.
"It's what I like," he said. He said that year's style was a good one, he likes the carburetor, and that he's also partial to the black and gray color.
Joe "JJ" Toscano and Doug Warchick brought a modified Chevette race car owned by Danbury's Don Lajoie. Toscano said that the car raced at the Danbury Fairgrounds in the late '70s and early '80s, and still races periodically.
Skip Lerow has owned his 1966 Corvette Stingray for about 15 years. He primarily uses the car for shows and cruises, but has driven it to New York and Lake George.
"I like the color, and I had to have the side pipes and the four-speed," he said. He has managed to keep it in the same condition since he first bought it.
Future concerts this summer will also be preceded by car shows. Click here for a full schedule of dates and performers.
