NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Hospital is offering residents the chance to save the lives of those battling leukemia, lymphoma and dozens of other blood diseases with a bone marrow drive Monday.

The donor drive at Norwalk Hospital runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is sponsored by 6 East Ave. Registration requires paperwork and a cheek swab but no blood is taken at registration, according to a release from the hospital.

Donors must be between the ages of 18 and 44, in good general health and willing to donate to any person matched in the registry, the release said. Certain medical conditions can make some residents ineligible to join the registry, according to the release.

"Every day thousands of patients who need a life-saving marrow or blood stem cell transplant are searching for a matching donor," representatives said in the release. "There are more than 15 million donors worldwide who stand ready to give someone a future, yet even with a registry of millions, there are patients waiting and hoping, unable to find a match."

Marrow could help treat and cure deadly diseases, representatives said in the release.

"Patients in need of a marrow or blood stem cell transplant are most likely to match someone of their own race and ethnicity," according to the release.

Those looking for more information are asked to contact Jennifer St. Peter, account executive for Be The Match, Rhode Island Blood Center, at 401-248-5762 or marrow@ribc.org.
