The event's aim was to record and track types of marine debris, so that the resulting statistical information could be used to eventually control it.
Girl Scout troops 50120, 50009, 50464 and 50242 took part in the event, which has been a Connecticut coastal staple for years.
The overall event, sponsored by the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy, has been around since 1986. In 2013 alone, the organization estimates more than 600,000 volunteers worldwide took part in local events.
