NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk residents and heart disease survivors Gavin Halsey and Abigail Stumpf will be the honorees and will lead the Fairfield County Heart Walk on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Gavin, 14, was born with one of his heart valves fused shut. He underwent multiple heart surgeries before he was 8 months old.
Since then, he has lobbied on Capitol Hill twice, was chosen to be on a panel at Stepping Stones Museum that featured children with heart issues and the importance of healthy eating, participated in five Heart Walks and has maintained an A average in school.
Gavin's preschool and elementary schoolmate Abigail, 14, is also a heart disease survivor. She battled through kidney disease and open heart surgery as well.
“Gavin and Abigail grew up with heart disease, but they didn’t let it stop them from leading amazing lives. They are busy high school students with their whole lives ahead of them—thanks to advancements in heart research and advanced treatments,” Kevin Byrne, Heart Walk Director, said in a statement. “We are grateful to them for sharing their stories.”
The Fairfield Heart Walk will be held at Sherwood Island State Park, located on Sherwood Island Connector in Westport. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, and the walk will start at 10 a.m.
