The gallery is one of the many public art programs the Norwalk Arts Commission has initiated and oversees. Four shows planned for the gallery in 2015-16 will focus on award-winning student artists, recognize Norwalk’s creative economy, celebrate the community’s diversity and introduce some of Norwalk’s many cultural organizations, according to a press release.
Slattery brings a wealth of experience to this new position, including curating exhibitions nationwide for various municipalities and private interests, according to a press release.
Slattery, a Norwalk resident who attended Norwalk public schools, is an artist, teacher and graphic designer with extensive experience in marketing and advertising, according to a press release.
She currently is a lecturer in interdisciplinary studies at Norwalk Community College, where she has served on various committees, including the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion.
The Norwalk Arts Commission is continuing its efforts, through its tours and programs, to increase awareness and pride in Norwalk’s historic Works Progress Administration mural collection, as well as the inventory of more than 100 works of public art.
“The Mayor’s Gallery is the gateway to the mayor’s office and represents Norwalk’s diversity in every sense. We decided it was time to hire a curator to dedicate and manage this very important public space,” said Susan Wallerstein, chairwoman of the Norwalk Arts Commission, in a press release.
“I want to thank the Norwalk Arts Commission and particularly members Tony Velez and Jeffery Price for taking the time review and select the best person for such a visible public space,” said Mayor Harry Rilling in a press release.
