The appointment of Armijo as executive director was made Monday in a press release.

“From an early age, I was taught that the quality of our community was based on the involvement of each of us,” she said in the announcement of her appointment.

“My father was an active volunteer in San Francisco where I grew up and since my early 20s I have been a part of organizations that emphasize education and exposure to the arts.”

Armijo replaces Peter Van Heerden, who resigned in December to become executive director of Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

After working in financial services, including as senior vice president and director of technical research at Standard & Poor’s, she was director of national advocacy for the nonprofit Boys Town. Armijo was also executive director of Boys Town New York, and the CEO/executive director of the Norwalk YMCA.

She was most recently was a real estate broker with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services in Westport.

The statement said Armijo’s “combination of financial, nonprofit, operational and fundraising experience make her uniquely poised to help drive future growth for the Westport Arts Center.”

The appointment comes as the Westport Arts Center is looking for a new location where it can expand its programs.

Lance Lundberg, chairman of the Arts Center’s board, praised the decision.

“Cynthia arrives at an opportune time as the town’s final planning recommendations for the Westport Arts Center and our own ambitions converge," Lundberg said.

“We are excited to envision a wonderful downtown location for our future home as an anchor to Westport’s cultural and arts community.”
