NORWALK, Conn. Republican Rick McQuaid has received the endorsement of the International Association of Firefighters Union, Local 830, in his bid to become town clerk. "Local 830 is proud to endorse Rick McQuaid for town clerk," Local 830 President Lefty Petrides said in a statement. "Rick has been very supportive of the Norwalk Fire Department and has supported our efforts to keep Norwalk safe. We look forward to working with Rick as town clerk."
McQuaid has a unique perspective in accepting the endorsement as firefighters came to his aid after he was struck by lightning in July. "Norwalk's firefighters exemplify a true commitment to all Norwalk's citizens," he said in a statement. "I have seen their commitment first-hand when they responded to an emergency at my home. Not only did Norwalk's firefighters arrive within seconds, but they showed tremendous care and compassion for my family at a very frightening time for them. "
McQuaid, currently the Common Council president, said he has worked closely with the fire department to promote public safety in his 16 years on the council. "I have worked hard to listen to the firefighters' concerns and to provide them the necessary tools to keep our fine city and citizens safe. I look forward to working with them and supporting their efforts as town clerk," he said.
The Norwalk firefighters' union has more than 100 members. Petrides has encouraged "all of the members of Local 830 Norwalk Fighters, their families and all the fine residents of Norwalk to support Rick McQuaid for town clerk."
