NORWALK, Conn. -- The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk will hold interviews for potential volunteer workers on Thursday, Sept. 19, and Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 5 and 7 p.m.

“Helping visitors, especially children, learn about Long Island Sound is personally rewarding and crucial in building public awareness about issues affecting our local environment,” assistant director of volunteers and community service Lisa Slinsky said in a statement. “The volunteer program is vital to the mission of The Maritime Aquarium and its educational goals. Plus, it's a fun way to join up with a group of people who have similar interests.”

Prior knowledge about marine animals is not necessary to be a Maritime Aquarium volunteer. Those selected to volunteer will be taught about marine life in a four-week training course, which will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Oct. 3.

You must be at least 15 to sign up. Volunteer shifts are four hours long. Volunteers work a minimum of four shifts per month for weekday staff, and two or three shifts per month for those with weekend availability.

Most volunteers work as gallery guides, helping visitors learn more about the represented animals of Long Island Sound, from crabs and sea stars to seals and sharks. There is also need for behind-the-scenes office and special-event assistance, and more.

A $40 fee covers the costs of training materials and uniforms. Volunteers receive discounts in the Gift Shop, Café and on many programs.

To sign up or for more information, email or call 203-852-0700, Ext. 2225.
