Lots of Volunteer Opportunities This Weekend

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — As the country marks Veterans Day, we at VolunteerSquare. com want to tip our hat to the men and women of our military – the ultimate volunteers. At Fairfield County-based, it's our mission to help individuals across Fairfield County become more engaged in their communities through volunteering.

This week especially, we feel inspired by the sacrifice and selfless spirit of service demonstrated by the brave men and women who serve our country every day. We think one of the best things we can do to honor that service is to give back to our own communities. Here in Fairfield County, there are plenty of opportunities to lend a hand. Here's just a quick look at some of them:

• In Stamford, St. Luke's LifeWorks needs adult babysitters to watch children of adults living in the emergency shelter/transitional housing program. The parents will be attending class.

• At Person-to-Person in Darien, the staff is looking for dedicated youngsters to be a part of their volunteer youth group. The high school-age volunteers will help run the food pantry, clothing center and reception area.

• Family Centers in Greenwich is looking for volunteer librarians to help gather books from local libraries for use in its classrooms.

• Domus of Stamford is looking for folks with a passion for healthy eating who can help teach students and staff how to prepare quick, easy and inexpensive healthy snacks.

These four opportunities represent just a small sample of the need out there in Fairfield County. No matter what your age, skill-set or background, you can find something you can do to help your neighbors. And what better way to honor those who serve us — not only this week but throughout the year?
