Letter: Proposed Norwalk Mosque Is Cause For Concern

To the editor:

This communication serves as a formal request that Mayor Harry Rilling and the Common Council stand up and defend the city of Norwalk against speculative lawsuits. We are not satisfied by the modestly revised plan and cash payout being considered.

It is more than apparent that the application to build a 27,000-square-foot [mosque] structure was rejected due to a host of substantiated reasons including, the overall size of the structure, lack of ample parking and extremely hazardous traffic issues.

We have been residents of the city of Norwalk for over 15 years and own a property on the West Norwalk border. We travel on Fillow Street on a regular basis, and we know that the intersection at 127 Fillow St. is a hazardous one. In addition, the blind curves and bends that lead to another difficult spot at Hunter's Lane and Fillow Street only add to the difficulties on this roadway.

Public school buses and parent/guardian drivers travel to at least three schools (or more) using this route (Kendall, Ponus and Fox Run). Needless to say, the traffic at this location is already very heavy. Why are we looking to exacerbate an existing problem?

It is time to stand up for the rights of this city and our neighborhoods and not yield to settlement and pure politics. When our property values go down due to an illegal zoning change, should we then bring a lawsuit against the city? We trust you will protect our neighborhood.
