To the Editor,
First, let me say that the deficit is a serious problem for Norwalk and I believe that people should be held accountable for its creation. Also, I do not think it is fair for kids at the elementary level to be hit nine times harder than the high schools and I hope that people's efforts in the protesting, letters, etc. will be rewarded with the fairest solution possible in regards to this city's children and teachers.
That being said, am I really hearing parents saying that they are considering moving to Westport or putting their multiple children in private school? I can only hope these comments are being said as empty threats. When I came to Norwalk, I was impressed with its diversity, its sense of community and the fact that my neighbors work HARD for what they have. Now that we are faced with a serious problem, these neighbors are demanding an immediate resolution to a problem that cannot be reversed and considering bailing on our community? If you have the funds to sell your home in a buyer's market and move to an area where you will be purchasing a smaller home for more money OR you have funds for private school, why aren't you offering to sponsor a high school sports team for next year or buying supplies for a kindergarten classroom? Are we really considering teaching our children that when times get tough, we run away and abandon those that have nurtured and cared for us?
I seriously hope that people will not get swept up into a mob mentality and begin to work on real solutions on how to deal with the situation we currently have. I will be here with my children, having faith in the teachers and administrators that have educated them for the past three years. I will be here with my children, having faith in the parents who send in money and snacks for class parties and volunteer their time at book carts every morning and organizing amazing fundraising events. I will be here with my children, doing the best with what we have, because that is the type of community I want to live in.
