NORWALK, Conn. — The Norwalk Kiwanis Club held a Community Give Back on Saturday, handing out lunches to the homeless and back-to-school backpacks to needy children.
The event was held at St. Joseph Church in Norwalk, and was set to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. By noon, all of the backpacks were spoken for.
"Our event today was to target the homeless, and provide the children of those families with backpacks and school supplies," said Paula Conte, president of the Norwalk Kiwanis Club. "We also handed out laundry bags to homeless adults, as well as hygiene products, towels and water bottles. And we also provided a lunch for them."
Conte said over 100 people showed up for the giveaway, and 50 backpacks were handed out. Everyone was grateful for the items and the food, she said.
"They loved it," Conte said. "Everyone thanked us. One mother said, 'I have five kids - do you know how much money you saved me?'
"So it was very exciting to hear those kind of comments. And the kids all had big smiles. ... One little guy had a dolphin on the back of his backpack, and he said, 'I got my favorite.' So he had a big smile on his face. ... It was just wonderful.
"There is a special need," Conted added. "Poor people are hurting. We're going to try to help the children - that's our goal, and to help lift the community."
