NORWALK, Conn. -- A fund-raiser to support Christian Olsen in his battle against mesothelioma will be held on Tuesday, March 18, at the South Norwalk Boat Club at 6 p.m.
Olsen, 33, has a rare cancer in both his chest and abdomen. The father of two hopes to undergo two major procedures, followed by rounds of chemo therapy. The surgery, however is expensive and Olsen's family lacks medical coverage for out of state treatment.
Olsen and his family are more than half way to their goal of $50,000 thanks to a gofundme.com fund-raiser that has generated nearly $29,000 as of Monday, March. 17.
There are 3,000 Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma every year, but most are between the ages of 60 and 80. The only known cause of the fatal disease is direct exposure to asbestos, though Olsen is unaware of how or when he would have come in contact with the substance.
Olsen's new goal is to "stick around on this earth long enough until a cure is found" so he can spend more time with his wife, 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.
"We have been on a mission from our first diagnosis of this beast, one that we will take down," Olsen said in a recent post on the gofundme.com site. "We have met so many great warriors/caregivers along the way we can't thank you all enough for your emotional, mental and spiritual support you have given to us!! We love you all."
Tickets to the fund-raiser are $50 a piece. Click here to purchase tickets to the event .
