Fire Official Helps Darien in More Ways Than One

There's no such thing as a typical day in Vic Pensiero’s world. “I’m all over the place, constantly juggling my time and my jobs,” he said. Pensiero is the assistant chief of the Darien Fire Department , the town plumber working for the Darien Board of Education and the father of two girls, Samantha, 10, and Alexis, 6.

For Pensiero, sitting still is not an option, especially after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease a decade ago. “I knew what it was like to sit around and not be able to do much,” he said. Pensiero received chemotherapy and radiation therapy, each for six months.

While receiving chemotherapy every two weeks, Pensiero still did what he could to remain active and lend a hand with plumbing and at the fire department. “When I could, I always made sure I was helping out because at that time in my life, it was better to be up and about than lying in bed,” he said.

After surviving Hodgkin's disease, Pensiero continues to live his life with a “do it while you can” outlook. “For me, it's not about the money, it's more about getting the job done and doing good for the people who deserve it,” he said. Pensiero works six days a week but takes Sundays for himself, football and his family.

Throughout the 19 years he has been working at the fire department, Pensiero has missed only two fires in Darien. “I’m constantly on call for both the fire department and for plumbing issues around town. I never really leave this town too much,” he said, smiling.
