East Norwalk Improvement Group Adopts New Name

NORWALK, Conn. – The recently rebranded East Norwalk Association has adopted its new shortened name to better reflect its mission of providing forums and discussions for community information and involvement.

The nonprofit group was formerly called the East Norwalk Improvement Association. It was founded in 1900 but has since moved beyond just making the area beautiful.

“Our new name – the East Norwalk Association – reflects our continuing commitment to our community as a unifying organization dedicated to the needs of East Norwalk residents, businesses and organizations,” said the association’s President Jim Anderson in a statement.

One of the association’s main focuses is on the East Norwalk Library, now referred to as the East Norwalk Association Library, which provides various programs and services to the community.

“The East Norwalk Library – now, the East Norwalk Association Library – has been serving East Norwalk since 1915,” said executive director Stan Siegel. “The library first started by offering books at the front window of Rundle’s Bakery on Van Zant Street. It was in 1917 that the East Norwalk Improvement Association purchased the land and built the present library building that still stands at 51 Van Zant St.”

In recent years, the library, which receives funding from the Third Taxing District, opened satellite services at intergeneration living facility The Marvin, the assisted living complex Maplewood at Strawberry Hill, and the Engine Company #3 of the Norwalk Fire Department.

“This is another reason for the name change,” said Siegel. “Our services, both from the Association and the Library go beyond ’improvement’ — the East Norwalk Association, today, remains a far-reaching and broad serving not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing a host of advantages to and for its community.”
