Town Clerk Andy Garfunkel is the Democratic candidate for mayor in November's election.
NORWALK, Conn. While our police department has worked hard to investigate the many shootings and violent crimes committed in Norwalk recently, the fact remains that the Republican administration continues to be asleep. I don't think another press conference about how everyone is doing their best helps stop the deplorable, irresponsible and depraved behavior by the young people who choose to pick up a gun and shoot at their peers, neighbors and innocent bystanders. Words alone without action do nothing.
The Norwalk Police are to be commended for their rapid response and investigation to recent shooting incidents . But where every Norwalker's focus should be is on preventing such incidents from happening in the first place. Especially those charged with setting budgets and policy like the Republican mayor and Common Council.
Our police department is underfunded and overworked. Ignoring this fact and pretending that this is not a significant problem does nothing to help the chief of police and the police department.
Our residents live with the fear that the next shooting will happen in their backyard. That is unacceptable. The Republican mayor and council say they are doing everything they can. Let's stop hoping that crime will go away and that everything is fine and being done. It is unacceptable to keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.
Let's put resources where they are needed. Whether it is more patrols, better street lighting or more investigators in the field, we should be allocating resources in the areas with the capacity to make a difference. Let's send a strong message that shooting guns in our neighborhoods will not be tolerated. Let's stop applauding ourselves for being responsive and do more to be proactive.
Do you think the police department is understaffed?
