The Stand Against Racism is an annual effort undertaken by YWCAs across the country as a way of promoting diversity, peace and understanding. The campaign started in 2007 in New Jersey and has become a signature campaign of the organization.

“Our objective is to bring people together who believe, like we do, that united, we can eliminated racism. We’re here today to unite as one community in order to celebrate diversity, raise awareness that racism and injustice still exist,” said Heather Cavanagh, executive director of the YWCA Darien/Norwalk.

The Pledge Against Racism states, “As an individual committed to social justice, I stand with the YWCA against racism and discrimination of any kind. I will commit to a lifetime of promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people in my community and in the world.”

Susan Marks, a member of the Darien Board of Selectmen, led the reading of the pledge at Darien Town Hall on Friday morning.

A second ceremony at Norwalk City Hall was led by Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling. At each event, those in attendance signed a poster with the pledge written on it as a sign of their commitment.

After reading the pledge, Rilling said, “We should all think about that, not just today when we’re taking the pledge, but think about this all the time, in everything that we think and everything we do. And if everyone did that, if everyone treated everyone equally, we could eliminate racism.”
