Norwalk residents will receive a number of special deals Saturday at the Maritime Aquarium as it says thank you to the city with a Salute Norwalk day. All you have to do is show proof of residency. The gifts include a free pass to the African Penguins.
Residents also can receive $1 discounts on the daytime showings of the IMAX movies "Island of the Sharks" at 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m., and "Everest" at noon and at 2 p.m. Residents can also get a 10 percent discount in the gift shop and Cascade Café.
Included in the freebie are exhibits featuring more than 1,000 marine animals including 7-foot sand tiger sharks, harbor seals, river otters, green sea turtles and pulsing jellyfish -- nearly all are native to Long Island Sound and its watershed. Seal feedings are at 11:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.
Also included is the ninth annual "Festival of Lighthouses" display, the meerkats exhibit, the "African Underwater Safari," and the "African Penguins" exhibit, which will end Jan. 2.
All Saturday visitors will be entered into drawings at noon and 3 p.m. to win an "All Access Penguins" backstage "meet-and-greet" to visit the penguins and learn about their care. Membership to the aquarium is a better deal on "Salute Norwalk" day. The $110 family membership will be for 15 months, instead of the normal 12.
