Also, Westport students received nine scholarships totaling more than $25,000.

The Norwalk-based Community Foundation and its donors awarded $12 million in grants in fiscal 2014. Nearly $5.5 million was awarded to 341 nonprofits in Fairfield County. In addition, 262 scholarships totaling more than $707,000 were awarded to local students.

The Westport nonprofits that received the greatest amounts of support included: Earthplace Inc.; Homes with Hope; Green Village Initiative; Save the Children; and Westport Country Playhouse.

“Thanks to the generosity of our fund holders and donors, young people are going to college, low-income families are living in safe housing they can afford, the arts are recovering from the recession, and dozens of causes are receiving support,” said Juanita James, Community Foundation president and CEO. “The Community Foundation and many of our donors also focus on regional issues such as helping youth become self-sufficient by 25, women achieve economic security, and nonprofits become even more efficient and effective.”

Grants from the Community Foundation come from two principal sources: donations to the Community Foundation placed in endowments to address the ever-changing community needs; and charitable funds established by individual donors at the Community Foundation. Scholarships are awarded by local high school programs as well as through a competitive application process at the Community Foundation.

Fairfield County’s Community Foundation promotes philanthropy as a means to create change in Fairfield County, focusing on innovative and collaborative solutions to critical issues impacting the community. Individuals, families, corporations and organizations can establish charitable funds or contribute to existing funds
