If you are looking for thrifty and non-toxic ways of controlling musty odors in your home, try these simple tricks:
"This Old House" magazine suggests putting a few lumps of charcoal (the type without lighter fluid) into hole-punched coffee cans and leaving them in damp spots. The charcoal will absorb odors and excess moisture in the air.
Mrs Clean recommends sprinkling baking soda over damp areas. The baking soda will soak up the moisture and eliminate any odors. Simply vacuum up when the smell has gone.
Iowa Water Damage suggests using a couple of ingredients from the kitchen. Bowls of white vinegar should be placed around the musty area. The vinegar neutralizes odors. Onions cut in half and placed in containers will absorb bad smells in 12 to 24 hours, after which time they should be discarded.
