STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Symphony has always been about reaching into its neighboring communities and appealing to people of all ages. And that means offering incentives for children.

The Stamford Symphony does a lot of outreach within the community.

The following are some fun facts you may not know about getting your kids involved in music.

  • Kids Go Free: Children under 18 are welcome to Sunday afternoon concerts with the Stamford Symphony free of charge with an accompanying adult.
  • Listen and Learn: This free interactive workshop demystifies the concert experience. Taught by a leading music educator, children learn how to listen and understand the music. MusiKids, as it's called, is held Sundays at 2 p.m., pre-concert.
  • Help Your School, Help the Arts: This fundraising enrichment program allows schools to sell Sunday concert tickets within their school community. All proceeds from ticket sales help fund arts programs at each participating school.
  • Move at the Museum: A partnership between the Stamford Symphony and Stepping Stones in Norwalk is geared to children under 10, and offers a variety of programs, including an exploration into musical instrument families where kids can hear, touch and learn about them as well as attend mini-interactive concerts focused for young children.
  • Take a Class: Ongoing mentoring partnership with the HARTT School of Music in West Hartford includes Masterclass opportunities with world-renowned musicians as well as training for exceptional students who receive the opportunity to learn by performing with the orchestra.
  • Get a Historical Perspective: Stamford Symphony works hand-in-hand with fourth and fifth grade music teachers in the Stamford Public School system to prepare children for a concert that focuses on their American history curriculum. Selected Stamford high school students receive the opportunity to sit side-by-side with professional musicians and high school choristers also perform at this event.
  • Link Up: Got a third grader in the Stamford Public School District? The Stamford Symphony recently announced the acquisition of a grant to implement Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute’s (WMI) Link Up program to all Stamford public school third graders. Approximately 1,350 students are participating in a yearlong, hands-on music curriculum about orchestral repertoire with a show March 18 at Westhill High School.
