Norwalk Woman Creates New Seminar On Concussion Management For Schools

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Concussion Conference 3.0, a one-day seminar on concussion management training for school nurses, school staff and other professionals who work with Concussed Students will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Quinnipiac University School of Medicine.

The conference is being organized by Norwalk’s Katherine Snedaker, founder of PinkConcussions.com a nd SportsCapp.com.

The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Quinnipiac School of Medicine at  370 Bassett Road in North Haven.

Dr. Anthony G. Alessi will be the guest speaker. Alessi is a board-certified, Connecticut neurologist in private practice specializing in general neurology, neuromuscular diseases, EMG and sports medicine.

He is an associate clinical professor of neurology at the University of Connecticut and serves as medical director for the Backus Hospital Primary Stroke Center. He was named Ringside Physician of the Year 2009 by the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians for his efforts in making boxing safer.

Alessi first became involved in sports medicine when he worked as an athletic trainer while attending Manhattan College. In 1995 he began an affiliation with the New York Yankees, which continues to the present. He has been a neurologic consultant to the Connecticut Defenders, the San Francisco Giants double A affiliate. In 1997 he was named to the consulting staff for the University of Connecticut Athletic Department. He is currently neurologic consultant to the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA. He chaired the Sports Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology and consults for the NFL Players Association.

As CEO and Chairman of Colonial Cooperative Care Inc., he oversees a physician-owned Connecticut medical management company and insurance brokerage.

In addition to Alessi and Snedaker, the conference speakers include: Fred Balsamo, executive director of the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors; Sarah Bullard, neuropsychologist at Gaylord Center for Concussion Care; James Doran, president of the Connecticut Athletic Trainers’ Association; David Johnson of DKJ Sports Medicine Associates; Dr. Michael Lee, of Concussion Specialists of Connecticut; Suzanne Levasseur, supervisor of health services, Westport Public Schools; Patricia McDonough-Ryan, pediatric neuropsychologist, Concussion Center of Fairfield County; Karissa Niehoff, executive director of the Connecticut Association of Schools, Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference; John Pizzi, director of athletics, Riverdale Country School; T.J. Quinn, investigative reporter, ESPN; Paul Slager, attorney, brain injury litigation, Silver, Golub & Teitell LLP; and Dr. David Wang of Elite Sports Medicine, who also is the team physician at Quinnipiac.

Snedaker was recently included in a show on ESPN's "Outside The Lines" on concussion safety.
