Under a bright and sunny sky — and while sweltering on a hot and humid Saturday — the students partnered with the American Diabetes Association to hold their annual “Kicks for Kids” last Saturday at Merwin Meadows Pond in Wilton.

During the event, over 1,000 kicks were performed by the students. The money raised will help children and adults who live with diabetes.

A demo team performed karate skills during the event. They are known for their fire breaks and high-intensity events.

Last year, the event raised over $3,873 for the cause. As of this week, $2,000 and counting has been raised — and the donations continue to come through.

Karate Universe was founded in 1992 and has been growing ever since. The school offers programs for both children and adults.

“It’s amazing what I have seen. I have had adults in my class and now I am getting second generations [their kids] and it’s nice to be able to train them as well,” says Master Spiros.

The academy teaches the authentic Martial Arts system developed by the internationally certified, 9th Degree Black Belt, Grandmaster Jhong Uhk Kim.

“We are trying to make a difference in the community and want to give back,” says Master Spiros, who has been teaching at the academy for over 25 years. His son, Master Dean, is the owner of the academy.

Donations can be dropped off at Karate Universe from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 664 Main Ave., Norwalk. You can also visit them on Facebook or their website.
