It's Hot, Eat Raw

I’m not one to look for an excuse not to cook, but it’s been so hot lately that I break a sweat just thinking about boiling a pot of water. Some local chefs are feeling the heat, too, and offering special “no cook” dinner deals.

For some, eating uncooked or raw foods is standard eating procedure, whatever the weather. And there’s a growing movement of people devoted to only eating raw, touting the health and beauty benefits they enjoy.

David Wolfe , author, teacher and raw food guru with an A-list following, told Natural News , “We have an understanding, based on 150 years of solid research, that there is superior nutrition in raw food versus any other kind of food.”

Sue Caldwell of Fairfield’s Health in a Hurry vegetarian café always has some raw dishes on her menu, like raw vegan sushi and orange kale salad. “It’s too hot to cook,” Caldwell said in an email last week.

And the Westport Whole Foods store is offering a raw food class, sharing preparation techniques, recipes and the nutritional science behind not cooking your food.

So, whether you’re looking for a lifestyle change, or just can’t stand the heat in the kitchen, midsummer might be the right time to explore raw foods.
