Go Full Service at Filling Station

One year ago, burgers got a serious upgrade when restaurateurs Nicholas Type and Seth Leifer opened Filling Station in New Canaan. Better than your average burger joint, Filling Station makes a habit out of surprising its customers. Monthly burger and milkshake specials -- like February’s remarkably rich Reuben Burger and Captain Crunch Milkshake -- keep customers lining up, sometimes out the door.

“We’ve fed about 100,000 people over the last year,” says Nicholas. “It’s a little like feeding Giants Stadium,” he laughs. But New Canaan only has a population of 19,000. Do the math, and you have to figure Filling Station has a particularly loyal clientele. “Absolutely we do,” says Nicholas. “The people have been incredible.” Almost on cue, a mother and her three children come in, and Nicholas greets them by name, as he does most customers. It’s clear that Filling Station’s recipe for success goes beyond a great burger.

“Because the customers have been so fantastic,” says Nicholas, “we wanted to find a way to say thank you. So starting March 1, which is our first anniversary, we’re kicking off a month of giveaways.”

When Nick says giveaways, he’s not kidding. March 1, the first 250 guests at Filling Station will get a free burger. March 14, the first 250 guests will snag a free order of their premium, organic, crispy crinkle cut fries. March 21, 250 lucky guests will walk away with a free Sloppy Joe. They’re holding a drawing to give away free t-shirts the week of March 14. And enter your name anytime during the month and you could win a year’s worth of free lunch.

Filling Station’s success in New Canaan has created quite a buzz, and rumor has it Seth and Nicholas could be scoping out a second location. “Sure, we’re thinking about it,” Nicholas smiles, but instead of elaborating, he offers me a chocolate-Oreo milkshake. It’s so good, I nearly forget my journalistic duty to press him for more details.

Whether you head in for the specials, the giveaways or to create your own burger, March is definitely the month to fill up at Filling Station. While you’re there, introduce yourself to Nick. He’ll be glad to meet you, and he won’t forget your name.

Filling Station is located at 19 South Avenue, in New Canaan.
