GM Says Goodbye to Mr. Goodwrench

For more than three decades he was a trusted neighborhood mechanic. Knowledgeable, courteous and impossibly clean-cut, he was the face of General Motors' service department.

But job security isn't what it used to be, even for the venerable Mr. Goodwrench, whose final day of work will be in February 2011. Replacing him, although he is arguably irreplaceable in the inanimate-object-named-for-product lexicon except perhaps by Mr. Clean, will be a "Certified Service" tag for each GM brand: Chevrolet Certified Service, Cadillac Certified Service, Buick Certified Service and GMC Certified Service.

But have no fear. Professionals will carry on the good work of Mr. Goodwrench, most recently portrayed in television ads by Stephen Colbert. On its website, GM assures, "Customers will continue to receive competitively priced service performed by trained experts who know their vehicles best at dealerships across the country."

Still, he will be missed. Sort of.
