El Charrito Opens to Warm Reception

Fairfield County’s best taco truck, El Charrito, has become Fairfield County’s best Mexican take-out joint. Sunday, Jan. 9, husband and wife team, Carlos and Alexandra Terron, opened the doors to their brand new El Charrito location in Greenwich. It was an intimate, invitation only event, held El Charrito’s new digs. Happy to be on the short list, I donned my snow boots and parka and headed over in search of Carlos’s particular brand of comfort food to warm my evening.

Inside the modest storefront, the convivial atmosphere was contagious. Guests peppered the clean, cozy space, toasting the latest success of the gregarious couple, and trickled in out of the cold in a steady stream. Everyone knew the Terrons. Or, more accurately, everyone knew the food.

“I have two favorites,” Janelle Fludd, a Stamford resident and El Charrito devotee told me. “The enchiladas verde and the carnitas. Everything is so fresh. And I’m a little bit of a health freak. I try to eat well. What Carlos cooks is always so good, the meat and the veggies. And it’s never, ever greasy. I couldn’t be happier that they’re expanding.”

“His sauces just pop,”added Paula Andrews, a yoga teacher and long-time El Charrito fan. “The black beans are delicious. Everything is delicious! I remember the first time I met Carlos. I worked close by and I stepped outside and smelled the most amazing food. I’m from Southern California, and it smelled like that, like good, good Mexican food. I walked over to the truck and said, ‘What are you making in there?’ Carlos just smiled and said, ‘Honey, you have to try this.’ I’ve been hooked ever since.”

As Alexandra bustled between guests, she told me that the new restaurant won’t replace the truck. Instead, it will be a complimentary operation. “The truck will reopen in March,” she said as she greeted a couple with a baby in tow. So, who will cook where? “This is my baby,” she told me, smiling, “The truck is his baby,” she said nodding to Carlos.

The new El Charrito location is open Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert, and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They offer take-out, delivery and catering.

The evening was punctuated by the spicy, savory smells emanating from the sparkling new kitchen. Finally, as the sun began to sink and the world outside the restaurant’s large picture window started to darken, Carlos uttered the words every single one of us was dying to hear: “Alright everybody. Let’s eat.”
