Nielsen’s florist was established in 1944 by Hilda and Christian Nielsen. Still in its original location in Darien, it is now run by their granddaughter, Sandra Nielsen-Baumann. And in preparation for Mother's Day, she has stocked the shop with every flower imaginable to make the bouquet of mom's dreams.

And when it comes to shopping for mom, Nielsen’s also offers a one-stop destination for plant and floral needs, home décor and gifts.

But it always comes back to the flowers. There is no more important holiday when it comes to flowers than Mother's Day, which is even bigger than Valentine's Day. In fact, Mother's Day accounts for a fourth of the floral purchases made for holidays. About 35 percent of adults bought flowers or plants as gifts for Mother's Day last year.

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 66 percent of those celebrating Mother’s Day will buy mom flowers, spending an estimated $2.4 billion in 2016.

Based on consumer purchases of fresh flowers and plants for holidays at all outlets, the top holiday is Christmas, followed closely by Mother's Day with Valentine's Day coming in third.
