Breathe New Life into Old Dressers

Jackie Glick, assistant home manager at Anthropologie in Westport, had spent the morning restocking the store’s supply of hooks and glass knobs, which was perfect because I was there looking for some unusual hooks for my mudroom.

“We get lots of moms who are redoing their kids’ bedrooms,” Jackie said. “They put new knobs on the dresser and it changes the look immediately.” Jackie went on to say that she’s updated her own room and switched out the old knobs her chest of drawers with sparkling pastel glass knobs. “It looks fantastic,” she enthused.

In my opinion you can never have enough hooks. And why people don’t install more of them in their homes or offices is a mystery. In restaurants, for example, how often have you had to balance your purse on the edge of the sink in the restroom? You certainly don’t want to put it on the floor.

The same goes for the powder room in your home. You might not be carrying your pocket book around in your own home, but guests might. Find a hook that matches the faucets – an oil-rubbed bronze hook won’t look great if your faucet is satin nickel – and screw it into the door. Five feet off the ground and centered on the door is the way to go. Your guests will be pleasantly surprised at your thoughtful touch.

Did you know that Anthropologie sells more than just clothes? Next time you’re in the Greenwich or Westport store, take a look at their collection of unusual hardware.
